Publishing Basics
by Felicia Write
Congratulations! You finished writing the next best seller. You defied writer’s block with cartoon inspirations and endless cups of lukewarm coffee. Rewrites are a distant memory; and now you are ready to plunge into the electrifying world of publishing.
As your focus shifts to the reality of what lies ahead, your “To Do” list will certainly stretch by the hour. With publishing companies to research, query letters to write, and ideas to brainstorm, expect your needs to grow, and your confidence to get a little shaky. This rings especially true if you are a publishing newbie. Don’t give up! You can do this if you avoid the primrose path, resist the naysayers, and stay focused.
Review your “To Do” list, and arrange tasks according to importance. Hire an editor. Many writers mistakenly disregard this step. However, we writers tend to unconsciously overlook our personal gaffes. It oftentimes takes someone apart from us to see errors, prod, and correct our mistakes. A great editor will spot grammatical goofs that you may have missed; and will offer suggestions to strengthen your manuscript. Think of an editor as your writing coach, someone who will bring out the very best in order to get you and your book on the winning team.
Consider different publishing options such as self-publishing, or e-books. Brainstorm creative cover design and marketing ideas with family and friends. Use social networking to find other authors who may be willing to share their publishing experiences. Create a publishing schedule with reasonable deadlines, and promise yourself that you will stick to them. Publishers love working with writers who are active and involved in creating and promoting their books.
Exhaust your publishing options before you commit. Compare terms and cost. Protect yourself. Protect your manuscript. Good luck!
